How long is the commitment?

We ask adult mentors to commit to one year as a lunch buddy.


It is really just 30 minutes a week?

Yep. Just show up for lunch. It's that simple.


Is this a school sanctioned program?

Yes. Lunch Buddies is managed by a staff member at each school.  The program has the school's full support.


Are Lunch Buddies in other schools?

Lunch Buddies is currently only available at Grizzlies Preparatory Charter School  in Downtown Memphis. It will be available at three additional schools January 2020.


What will I talk to the students about during lunch?

We recommend asking open ending questions that will help you get to know the students. You can always about school or hobbies and interests outside of school.  We're sure you will find you have at least one thing in common.


What’s my relationship with the parents?

A parent may choose to introduce themselves briefly during your first lunch, but parents choose not to be present during lunch so students can bond freely with you.


Where will I park when I arrive for lunch

All schools have a parking lot with available parking for guests. Some schools have designated parking for Lunch Buddies. Look for parking signage when you arrive.


Will I need to sign in at the office each week when I arrive for lunch?

Yes. Signing in let's staff know you are in the building for safety and helps staff keep a record of how often you come for lunch. Please sign in with school office or using the Envoy ipad and then report to the specific room where you have lunch with your b


Can I eat the school lunch? Do I even have to bring a lunch?

Unfortunately we cannot offer the lunch food that was prepared for our students.  You may choose to bring your lunch or opt not to bring a lunch. Some mentors bring a "special" lunch for students to reward good grades or conduct. This is entirely optional.


Are the lunches supervised by staff?

School staff/Teachers may visit the room during lunch to check on a student. Mentors meet with their buddies in a classroom where other mentors may also be having lunch with their buddies. Very seldom are mentors alone with students during lunch.


What does the info session consist of?

This 1-hour lunch presentation will cover the mission and values of the school, mentor expectations, guidelines, & procedures of mentoring at the school. Lunch is provided.


Will I receive ongoing mentor training or tips?

In order to begin having lunch with students, you must complete a 1-hour mentor training which happens during lunch, and lunch is provided. You will also receive a monthly email filled with mentoring tips.
